Post July 1st - Bar Trade Remains Strong

September 2007

Despite the predicted doom and gloom for the market on supposed massive declines that were expected from the introduction of non-smoking, the performance of the majority of bars show that they have remained strong or even grown in terms of sales after the introduction of non-smoking unlike a large number of gaming rooms which did not introduce non-smoking prior to July 1 and do not have a smoking break out area. These preliminary results have also shown that country gaming has not been as volatile as gaming in the city.
There is no hard and fast rules about the cause of the minority of bars which have shown declines in trading performance but may be contributed too by competing venues having completed major refurbishment, with late night trading venues being the hardest hit early in July, now returning slowly to past trading levels with a combination of new clients and the return of existing clientele coming to grips with the new smoke free environment.
