Smokers Leading The Crowd

December 2006

A number of Hoteliers in the last quarter of 2006 have lead the charge in developing their Hotels to be able to deal with the upcoming no-smoking regulations.

We are seeing two very distinct owners, the ones that are pro-active in making their venues suit the proposed changes and the ones that are "sitting on their hands" and will react post July 2007 to a decline in trade.

New South Wales is no different to Victoria and Queensland were we are seeing groups of people basically go to venues that have the facility for their mates to smoke.

There are two fine examples of the pro-active venues, the first being the Edinburgh Castle Hotel Sydney which have transformed what appears to be an old light well into a platform on the first floor which has the capacity to seat approximately sixty patrons. This transformation has been the talk of coffee shops and cafes in City South, and the comments have been all positive.

The second is Thomas Hotels major refurbishment of the Aurora Hotel in Surry Hills, which has seen a major refurbishment incorporate new balcony and roof top beer garden areas. This refurbishment proves why Thomas Hotel Group is one of our leading Hotel owners.

Smokers are now getting themselves set up for where they will spend their disposal dollars post July 2007. This is why in our view at JTW pro-active Hoteliers will not see a decline in trade, but if anything may see stable trading performance and in some cases a growth in revenues, profits and subsequently value from what they attract in new customers as the smokers call their hotel home.
